Math
Course instruction focus is on 3 critical concepts:

Applying equations in one and two variables

Understanding the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships

Applying the Pythagorean Theorem and the concepts of similarity and congruence
Science
Our focus is on physical scie nce. By the end of the year the students will have learned about atoms, the smallest unit of matter. The students will also learn about the periodic table and how how all matter is organized. 8th graders compete in the annual Science Fair.
Social Studies
Students in the 8th grade study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution through the Reconstruction. Students will trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, and the causes and consequences of the Civil War.
Special Highlights include: Day in Court, retreat at CYO camp, Sacramento capitol.
English Language Arts
In eighth grade, students utilize the four language arts processes: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students will learn about various literary devices, including plot structure, narration, imagery, symbolism, figurative language, etc. Students will also learn about the origin of literary texts such as fables, short stories, myths, and epics, and will read and analyze such texts to discern their meaning and import. Reading instruction will expose students to a variety of reading strategies for reading novels and expository text. Themes related to self-definition, society and class, gender, gentrification, morality, ethics, justice, judgment, and race will be explored. Writing instruction will include the development of written communication skills, including narrative, informative/explanatory, and argumentative writing.
Religion
Eighth grade students are expected to complete service hours and complete a project based on the Declaration of Human Rights. Glide Memorial kitchen, SF Food Bank.
